The short answer: Woodworm is usually active if you can see fresh, pale flight holes with sharp edges and fine, bright dust (frass) underneath them. Old holes that are dark, dusty or full of dirt usually mean the infestation has died out, but only an inspection can confirm it.
Signs it is still active
- Small round flight holes with clean, pale edges
- Fine, gritty dust that reappears after you clear it away
- Timber that crumbles or feels soft near the holes
- Adult beetles or fresh holes appearing in the warmer months
Signs it is historic
- Dark, dusty holes, sometimes with cobwebs or paint over them
- No fresh dust appearing over several weeks
- Timber that is firm and sound around the holes
What to do next
Holes alone do not tell the whole story. Woodworm thrives in damp timber, so we also look for the moisture that is feeding the problem. If the infestation is no longer active and the timber is sound, treatment may not be needed.
