The short answer

Woodworm is the larvae of wood-boring beetles feeding on timber, and it is most common where timbers are damp. We assess and identify the beetle, confirm whether the infestation is active or historic, and treat it only if it needs treating.

Signs of woodworm to look for

  • Small round exit holes in floorboards, joists, roof timbers or furniture
  • Fine, powdery dust (frass) below the holes
  • Timber that feels soft or crumbles at the edges
  • Adult beetles on windowsills in spring and summer

Is my woodworm still active?

Many homes have historic woodworm that died out years ago and needs no treatment. Woodworm in buildings is not uncommon, especially where damp timbers are present. Fresh, pale dust and clean-edged holes can suggest activity; old, dirty holes with no dust are often historic. A survey tells you whether the beetles are still active, and whether damp is the underlying cause.

How we diagnose it

We assess, identify and remediate wood-boring beetles, and determine whether the infestation is active or historic.

How we treat it

  1. Survey: identify the beetle and check whether it is active
  2. Find and fix any damp that is feeding the problem
  3. Treat active infestations
  4. Explain what we found and what, if anything, is needed

Woodworm Treatment FAQs

Do I need to treat historic woodworm?

Not always. If the infestation is no longer active and the timber is dry and sound, treatment may not be needed. A survey tells you which applies.

Can I get a woodworm survey before buying a house?

Yes. Our damp and timber surveys cover woodworm and are available to buyers before they commit.
