The short answer: Black mould is caused by condensation, so cleaning it off is only half the job. To stop it returning, reduce the moisture in the air, keep surfaces warmer and improve ventilation.

Everyday steps

  • Use extractor fans when cooking and showering, and keep doors closed so steam does not spread
  • Dry washing outside or in a ventilated room
  • Keep furniture slightly away from external walls
  • Wipe condensation from windows and sills each morning
  • Keep a steady, moderate level of heating

Treating existing mould

Clean affected areas with a suitable mould wash. Painting over mould without dealing with the cause means it will usually come back.

When ventilation needs upgrading

If condensation keeps returning, a positive input ventilation (PIV) system can help by keeping fresh, filtered air moving through the whole home. We supply and install these across Belfast and Northern Ireland.
